The "Disk Wipe" Concept
When you use your mouse to click a file's icon and then select the Delete Option, you might get the impression that the harddrive read/write heads somehow are scrubbing clean the clusters on the disk that contain data. That does NOT happen. Instead, the operating system file management simply changes the status of the files's clusters to "empty" and removes the file name from the index file (its File Table of Contents).
But while the file name no longer appears in a directory listing, the data itself STILL remains on the device.
While you might think that this data is as good as erased, it is quite possible for utilities to recover much of this "deleted data", if not all. Law enforcement agents, for example, use these utilities to gather evidence from deleted files on the computer disks of suspected criminals. The larger your hard drive the more likely that "old deleted and forgotten data" still remains.
On a Terabyte hard drive a user may run literally for years accumulating information and never overwriting any data that had been thought to have been deleted years before.
Furthermore, even if you were to overwrite the data, it is still largely recoverable since the "shadow" or "electromagnetic pattern" that it leaves provides a signature of what data bytes had been there prior to the overwrite.
Disk Wipe is a utility which will completely overwrite and destroy all existing "deleted" data on your hard drive(s). Every physical byte of the "deleted" data and "unused space" will be overwritten with a bit pattern. This program will permanently erase and virtually destroy all deleted data that could possibly be recovered with today's technology. You may overwrite the disk as many times as you like so that compliance with US Department of Defense requirements will not be an issue.
The DiskWipe Utility will target those deleted files and renders the data unrecoverable. It does NOT target your valid "undeleted" data. This utility will completely eliminate ONLY the contents of your intended deleted files.
Sanitize your disk before it is made available to other parties. Before selling or donating your old drive, wipe it first! This way you can be sure others do not have access to your data even when using data recovery or low level disk access tools. There are many Windows "erasure" type tools available that promise secure deletion of deleted files and/or temporary files. Do not rely on these types of tools to make *all* data unrecoverable. The only way to ensure all data is securely destroyed is by wiping clean both the disk index and the contents of the disk surfaces.
