VM Operator Automation Management Facilities

The Operator Automation Facilities is a small suite of programs that extends IBM's zVM Programmable Operator Facility (PROP) for superior functionality. It permits automation management of the zVM OPERATOR function and secure multi-user viewing of the zVM Master (OPERATOR) Console.

Many VM Data Centers run with the "out of the box" VM Master OPERATOR console which provides very little in the way of navigation. The native VM console presentation provides a rudimentary teletype rendering of messages. Staff may find the zVM OPERATOR Console facility limited and in need of regular attention to review and clear arriving messages.

The OPERLOG facilities allow you to view, monitor and interact with the disconnected zVM OPERATOR Console from any local or remote location. The Operator console can be viewed simultaneously by multiple support staff members via 3270 terminal emulation from any platform.

An optional program provided with the professional version, called PROPROLL, is a supplied module that acts as the zVM Logical Operator. It captures all incoming message traffic directed to the Logical Operator and presents them on a full-screen display in real-time. The console messages roll forward automatically. All messages are backward/forward scrollable. Commands issued by authorized users are sent to the zVM OPERATOR machine, are executed on the requestor's behalf, and the responses are returned to the requestor as well as logged to the zVM OPERATOR console.

The OPERLOG viewer module formats the raw console data log file produced by zVM Programmable Operator and displays a fullscreen of the most recent messages posted. The facility employs timed refreshment so that you see the messages as they occur. It also is scrollable, has searching and filtering capabilities.
Furthermore, each OPERLOG viewer instance can be constrained to me1ssages from1 a single machine such as a zLINUX guest.
Daily message logs are automatically archived and retrievable through the viewer.

OPERLOG is secure. All users need only Class 'G' privileges. To execute a sensitive or powerful command, the user must be authorized via the zVM Programmable Operator Routing Table. Unauthorized users have only the capability to view the message traffic.
All authorized user commands and responses are displayed, logged, timestamped and archived.
No need to give authorized users other than minumum privileges they need to properly do their job.
No hunting down the users who abused, inadvertantly or not, their privileges and may have caused a problem.
No guess work, just the hard facts.

You will never be far from your zVM Console.

OPERLOG is a must for forensic analysis when you need to investigate a problem event caused by a VM service machine or Guest system.
